A Search for Jewish-Designed Homes from the 1950s and 1960s

Dr. Gerald L. Pocius, Senior Research Fellow at Cape Breton University, is researching mid-century modern homes in the Sydney-Cape Breton area, built in the 1950s and 60s by Jewish professionals.

These were often architect-designed homes, following the latest ranch house fashions of their day. Pocius’ work has focused so far on four houses on Howe Street (built by the Lecker’s, Spinner’s, Cohen’s, and Davidson’s).

He is interested in learning about the construction and design of these and similar ranch houses of the period, as well as architects working in the Sydney area, and how Jewish residents were instrumental in bringing the designs of modern housing to Cape Breton.

Dr. Pocius can be contacted at  gerald_pocius@cbu.ca.
