Holocaust Education Committee

The AJC’s Holocaust Education Committee plans and coordinates an array of informative educational speakers, programs, presentations, movies, and exhibits aimed at educating the general public of Atlantic Canada about the Holocaust and human rights. Some of the Holocaust Education Committees events include:

• Holocaust Education Week in the Fall
• An event for International Holocaust Remembrance Day in January
• Yom HaShoah events across Atlantic Canada in the Spring
• The Asper Foundation’s teen Human Rights and Holocaust Studies Program* for Jewish teens (every other year) and in schools across Atlantic Canada

*The Asper Foundation Human Rights and Holocaust Studies Program objectives are to promote respect for others and sensitize Canadian grades 7 to 9 students to the consequences of racism through a specially designed education program. As part of the program, students are required to take an 18-hour education program, or its equivalent, on human rights and the Holocaust with an added emphasis on Canadian history and the current situation in the world today. At the end of the program, students travel to Winnipeg, MB to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The students are also required to volunteer for 10 hours in their communities on charitable projects of their choosing. The objective of this aspect of the program is to underscore each person’s responsibility as a citizen and to impress upon the students the difference one person can make.
