An Update on Recent Disturbing Reports Regarding Neo-Nazism in Cape Breton

July 24th: We are aware of reports in the German newspaper Der Spiegelamplified in the Halifax Examiner, that allege that a network of German nationals are attempting to acquire land in Cape Breton with the purpose of establishing a colony of far right radicals and neo-Nazi ideologues. We were first made aware of these reports in February, and we immediately alerted our security team at CIJA and contacted the RCMP. Our discussions with the RCMP are ongoing, and we will report developments to our community as necessary and as they occur. Though these reports are alarming, there was nothing in the reports to suggest an immediate security threat to the Jewish community of Atlantic Canada.

August 8th: In a previous newsletter, we let this community know that we were aware of the allegations in the German newspaper Der Spiegel, alleging that a network of German nationals are attempting to acquire land in Cape Breton with the purpose of establishing a colony of far right radicals and neo-Nazi ideologues. Since that time, there have been many reports about this allegation in newspapers across our region and across the country.
Our discussions with the RCMP are still frequent and ongoing, and we promise to report developments to our community as necessary and as they occur. There is still nothing to suggest an immediate security threat to the Jewish community of Atlantic Canada.
In the wake of these news reports, we were pleased to see that many politicians and public figures came out with statements vehemently against extremism and hateful ideology. You can see two examples of such statements below.
Thank you in advance for your patience as we work with the RCMP to ensure that this issue is resolved.
