Anti-Semitism at its worst in Atlantic Canada since start of Israeli-Arab Conflict

We are the Atlantic Jewish Council and we represent the vast majority of Atlantic Canadian Jews. We are your fellow Atlantic Canadians, your friends, and your neighbours. We are a diverse community that comes in different shapes, sizes, professions, sexual orientations, and skin colours.

We have a varied range of political views. Above all, we are proudly Canadian, and we know that, with our fellow Canadians, we have much more in common than not.

Recently, we have witnessed an 11-day wave of violence between Hamas and Israel. The loss of life – Palestinian and Israeli – is a heartbreaking tragedy.

Since the onset of this conflict, we have also seen a rise in pro-Palestinian protests and imagery. Like all Canadians, the Atlantic Jewish community values the rights to free expression and to peaceful assembly and protest, including the right to protest Israeli government policies. However, when actions transition to hate speech, threats and violence, then those actions must be condemned by civil society and political leaders.

An Op-Ed by the Executive Committee of the Atlantic Jewish Council published in the Chronicle Herald and on Saltwire.com.
