Shaar Shalom Employment Opportunity: General Manager

Contract Terms: Part-time

Hours per week: 30 including Hebrew school hours (currently Tuesdays and Sunday mornings)
Salary: $40,000
Location: Shaar Shalom Synagogue, 1981 Oxford Street, Halifax, NS, B3H 4A4

DAILY AND MONTHLY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the synagogue: building, kitchen, and office.
  • Provide oversight for a small staff, including office administrator and caretaker.
  • Act as administrator of the Hebrew School, working with teachers and coordinating volunteers for weekly snacks, reading and registration materials, the Hebrew reading program, and the Kabbalat Shabbat program.
  • Report monthly to the Board of Directors on synagogue issues, concerns, and activities.
  • Work with the Board to provide sound advice on strategic and operational matters. 
  • Facilitate, support, and encourage volunteerism by coordinating and managing activities and fundraisers led by volunteers.

ONGOING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support volunteers in planning and executing special programs and events.
  • Develop, in conjunction with the Board, an annual programming calendar.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for staff and provide an overview and recommendations to the Board on ways to improve and continue to engage.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • You have managerial experience overseeing staff, and setting and meeting deadlines.
  • You can coordinate and manage the needs of the physical plant (building, grounds, cemetery), using the help of subcontractors and able volunteers.
  • You have a record of solid communication, collaboration and delegation skills.
  • You are adept at multi-tasking and can solve problems on the fly.
  • You have a strong knowledge of Jewish practice and religion.
  • You are adept at organizing and energizing volunteers for weekly, monthly and annual events and programs.
  • You have strong planning and executional skills developing programs and events.    
  • You can prioritize and effectively time manage a flexible schedule.
  • You are computer literate and have experience working with Microsoft Office.
